Transfer of warranty.

My wife bought a sewing machine off another person. It was brand new and unopened boxed. I assumed we could register it as new to obtain a warranty, but the sewing machine company declined the registration as they say their warranty only applies to the original purchaser.

Are a company not legally obliged to provide at least a one year warranty on a new product, regardless of who owns it?

    No.

And your wife has no consumer rights against the retailer as she wasn't the purchaser. Better hope it doesn't go wrong!

Manufacturer warranties are not consumer rights, and they don't have to offered. Beyond that, if a warranty was offered to the original purchaser, there is no right to make it transferrable.

Have a think about it - lots of items don't even tell you who the manufacturer is.

Two disadvantages in buying a brand new item from a private seller, little or no recourse under Consumer Rights Act 2015 and manufacturers' guarantees/warranties are not always transferable.

Presumably she didn't pay the full retail price that the seller paid for the item? That's the risk you take to get the cheaper price.
