John Lewis promo codes taking off less than advertised (vent)

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this or if I’m just unlucky, but twice now a My John Lewis discount code has taken off less than advertised (eg “Save £19 off this item with the code SAVE19blahblah, apply code at checkout”. I’m always signed in and have read the ts & cs, apply the promo code directly, and £17 is taken off at checkout.

I know it’s only £2, but this is the second time it’s happened and it’s annoying. Customer Service take an age to see why it might be happening, then tell me to place the order and they’ll refund me the difference. Trouble is, the refund isn’t to my Partnership card, it’s an e-voucher that I have to buy something else in order to use. I argued politely and they sent me a £10 gift card instead, but with no explanation for why this keeps happening.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is it just annoying, or more akin to false advertising?

Do you have the link to any terms?

Sometimes people mess up and either code the offer wrong or write the description wrong… remember that happened to me once where it was supposed to be £100 off any electrical over £1,000 but you could actually apply it to any electrical at all so it allowed me to order a £105 item for £5. I told a friend and they did the same, we both then got an email saying there was an error and our orders had been cancelled. He was lucky as his turned up the next day but mine never did.

Sometimes it's that the rules are more complex and people havent understood the terms of the voucher correctly but its operating as intended.

These things tend to be relatively rare so maybe something else is afoot if you keep experiencing them.

  • Hi, thanks for replying. I’m too new to post links, apparently, but on JL.com it’s the special offer on the Kindle Paperwhite Signature 32gb. It’s £19 off that one or £16 off the 16gb.

Even Customer Services confirmed that I’d done everything right. First time it happened on a different product it was “save £25” but IIRC it only took £21 off. Wasn’t delivery charges because delivery was free both times.

It’s almost as if whomever is programming the codes is doing it for £2-5 less. If it is happening to other people as well I wonder how many are noticing or can be bothered to complain? Really odd.
