Parking eye - Broken down car that I have since sold

Hi All,

I have today (19/02/2026) received a PCN for £100 (or £60 if paid now) from ParkingEye issued 16/02/2026, for an event that took place on 12/02/2026.

I parked in a ASDA carpark in Bolton to buy some lunch, and when I came to leave my car battery was flat. I called a local "man with a van" that I found on facebook and got him to come out and fit a replacement battery, as this was quicker and cheaper than the AA. I ended up spending 2hr 21 minutes in the car park according to the PCN, out of a 2hr limit.

I don't have any receipt from the "man in the van", only a WhatsApp chat log where I contacted him and arranged for his services. Unfortunately, he did give me a receipt for the battery he bought, but I ended up throwing it away a few days later.

I don't know if this has any impact on my position here, but I actually sold the car to We Buy Any Car on the 14/02/2026, so I am now no longer the registered keeper.

I plan to complain to the store manager at ASDA once I find their contact details, but is it worth appealing to ParkingEye in the meantime even though I don't have any hard proof?

Many thanks!

  • If the parking time limit is 2 hours and you exceeded it what are you going to complain about to the Asda store manager ?

I think a far better approach would be to politely explain your unique circumstances, hope he has sympathy and try to persuade him to cancel the fine.

    Good luck.

My car broke down in a Tesco car park and I went to the desk and explained that it would have to be there overnight.

They immediately logged that. I was able to get going again later. I received no fine.

Easier to see after the event but that's what you should have done.

Some supermarkets don't have kiosks, our Lidl don't but I'd have asked to see the manager. Don't leave it to chance.

You can throw yourself on their mercy but don't think that will work.

Can you print off the chat you had?

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Errrrrr … literally every shopper (even if overstaying) has a valid reason to complain angrily to supermarkets who let ANPR agents issue scary invoices to people. This is unacceptable harassment of shoppers.

Asda cancel these for people every day of the week! Better to go in person but the OP should keep the original invoice, not hand it over to Asda.

Why do you call this a fine? Read the MSE Guide to fighting Private Parking tickets. Martin Lewis personally checked the new Guide 6 months ago and it makes it clear that this is the 'Wild West' of sectors and nobody has to pay.

Every person is told that landowner complaint is always Plan A.

    And that these aren't fines!

PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • Good news! I had a short phone call with ASDA customer services today using the number for my local store. It seemed like the call went through to a central customer service call center - presumably in India based on accent.

The representative asked some questions about the PCN, and whether it was the first time I had received a PCN at an ASDA store. I told him it was ParkingEye and it was my first one and he took my details and made the cancellation request immediately - no proof required on my end. Seems like it may be standard procedure for them to just cancel it if it's your first time. I have checked the balance on the ParkingEye website and it's now at £0 pending, so just waiting for an official confirmation letter now.

Here's the email I received from ASDA customer services straight after my phone call.

Thank you for contacting the ASDA Store.

I would like to reassure you that I have submitted a cancellation request to Parking Eye on your behalf. Although customers are usually advised to contact Parking Eye directly to submit an appeal, I was more than happy to assist you on this occasion.
As we are only able to make this request once, I kindly ask that for any future visits you take a moment to review the parking terms and conditions displayed in the car park.
Please be aware that we will not receive confirmation directly from Parking Eye; however, you may check the status of your Parking Charge Notice at any time by visiting their website and entering your reference number.
Following this email, you may receive a short survey to complete. We would greatly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us ensure we continue providing an amazing and high-quality customer experience.

I am glad I was able to help you. Take care.
    Thanks and regards
