The gov has updated their advice and temporarily will allow entry for those who have an expired UK passport along with a foreign passport. So the urgency to renew an old UK passport has been removed.

However long they extend this temporary hold on the new regs, once it ends there will still be stories of people being unable to reunite with their relatives because of these new draconian laws that they knew nothing about.

It needs to be long enough that those effected can get passports. The major issue is still that children who have never had a British passport haven't time to get one as they didn't know about the rules. Claiming they are not British would be fraud and easily detected if they are travelling with a British parent who was born in Britain and is travelling with a British passport. Travelling alone eg young adults or with a parent not born in Britain (and therefore has no automatic right to British citizenship) would be easier.

Hi, I'm slightly confused by the new rules so hope someone can help clarify please. My wife only has a French passport (I am a British with a UK passport) and we live in the UK. If we travel abroad will she still be able to enter the UK on our return without any of the new documentation?

    Many thanks

As long as your wife applied for, and was granted settled status to live in the UK post-brexit, then she can continue to enter with her French passport. She doesn't need anything further.

If/when she renews her passport she should update her details with the Home Office portal.
