Advice on Inheritance Tax form IHT400
I need to complete Inheritance Tax for IHT400 because the estate does not qualify as excepted, however there will only be a small amount of tax to pay or perhaps none at all.
If there is some Inhertance Tax to pay do you send them a cheque with the form? Or do you wait for HMRC to look at the figures and then send you a statement or bill?
Do you need to get a case or reference number from the HMRC before you submit IHT400?
Thanks for your advice

You will need a ref number if there is IHT to pay, and you can send a cheque with the form.
Have you taken all the possible exemptions into account in your thinking that IHT maybe payable? I ask because often people don’t have a full understanding of the rules around transferable NRBs and residential NRBs.1 -
Thanks for your reply
I think I'm taking all the allowances into account and am using the Residence NRB and gifts from surplus income. I also have detailed records to support my figures.

Not a widowed person then?

No this IHT is for my Father and my parents were divorced many years ago after which he did not remarry.
So unfortunately no transferrable NRB's.
