Car insurance advice please
Hi. I have a 2014 Nissan Note, insured with Tesco. On January 31st I was driving out of Sainsbury's car park when a van reversed out of a parking space and went straight into my passenger door. He admitted liability and there was a witness. Yesterday, I took my car to Tesco's approved repairer where they are going to fit a new door.
The complication is that my car insurance is due for renewal on March 16th and I've just had Tesco's new qote. For this current year the cost was £276.93, for the coming year they now want £357.39
Martin has told us that we should be paying less this year, not more. So: are they penalising me for this accident that wasn't my fault? And given that I am technically still in the middle of sorting it all out, how do I go about explaining the situation to get quotes from other providers?
I'd really value some advice.
Thanks

You have had a crash. This has put you at higher risk. It would probably be worse if you had caused it.
All you do is answer the questions from other insurers honestly.

How is the claim noted on your renewal paperwork? By default an open claim is often treated as a fault claim as fault in insurance speak is only about if they recover their outlay and nothing to do with blame. Whilst the TP may admit responsibility there is always uncertainty until the money is in the bank and many insurers would rather that you rather than them take that risk.
If you renew with them then most will auto-correct the premium on the file closing as non-fault but things are more complex if you buy elsewhere.
Similarly just because the average premiums are going to come down that doesnt mean that everyone's will. Individuals are impacted by both their own actions and the actions of others who share similar characteristics as ultimately mass market consumer insurance is priced on statistical analysis

You can go with another company even whilst this incident is being dealt with. You don't have to stay with Tesco until it's resolved. It will be logged as "at fault" until it's all resolved. You will have to declare on your next quote that you have an ongoing claim; some sites will let you put that it's as yet undecided, whereas others the only option is to put the status of "at fault".
It's a shame that this happens but you still have to declare a claim for the next 5 years even if you were not at fault. But in terms of the insurers algorithms etc, they deem you to be in a more risky place having had someone reverse into you, than if it had not happened, so your quotes may well increase
