Clothing repaired but then repair failed - any rights?
Hi,
So my son bought a football shirt last July for £80. After a few months he noticed the lettering was coming off, so we contacted the club shop. They initially refused a return, but I pointed them in the direction of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and they backed down. A letter/number repair was done and the shirt was returned but a few months later the print is coming off again in a big way, but now I am at 8 months from purchase.
Do I have any rights to request further repair or replacement due to the repair being poor / item defective? I've checked the gov websites but doesn't seem to be any provision for this.
Thanks

Are you using any fabric conditioner when washing? I've always found that this happens when using fabric conditioner

Um, well… I don't tend to do the washing 😉but I suspect fabric conditioner is being used. Cheers for the tip.

The CRA allows you to go as many times as you want to them, after the first fix has failed however you also get the final right of rejection rather than having to accept either another repair attempt or replacement. Note that any refund can be discounted after 6 months to represent the use you had before rejecting the goods. Similarly after 6 months it's up to you to prove its faulty rather than either fair wear and tear or customer misuse.
Some merchants are reasonable and will just deal with things anyways, others will refuse to do anything until you have a report showing it's a manufacturing problem. Clearly it's easier to get such a report with some goods than others. The cost of a report can be added to your claim if you win.

Thanks. Essentially they hold the cards as they will just say "fair wear and tear" without proof of manufacturing defect, even if completely failing lettering on a £80 shirt inside the first year is pretty bad. It's not expensive enough for me to persue more strongly so I'll probably try to appeal to their better nature (lol) and if they say no then I'll make it clear that I'll not be buying new shirts in the future and will tell other fans on the club forums to steer clear…

Is the lettering printed or sewn on characters?

The iron-on sticker type by the looks of it. Player name and number. Basically the corners started peeling after a couple of months, were OK for a month or so after repair, and now pretty much hanging off.

It is not uncommon for iron-on lettering / designs to come off if the garment is washed at too high a temperature or brushed with an iron.
Is the shirt being washed and ironed inside out?
Is the ironing avoiding the location where the transfer is?

Is the shirt being tumble dried? Could it be mechanical wear and tear?

Have there been any other complaints about the lettering coming off?
IF it is dfue how it is being laundered then another one will do the same.
Some items of clothing need special care, especially with iron on transfers.

After 6 months yes, but before 6 months the reverse is true, its assumed a manufacturing issue unless the merchant can evidence its been caused by customer missuse etc
As stated before though, not all companies require it and are willing to arrange their own inspections if you say it's faulty.
