Argos Return Policy Changed?
I ordered and paid for Roku TV Stick £29 click and collect. I've always been comfortable buying from Argos because of their 30 returns policy. When I went to collect I had a horrible thought that it might conflict with the one I have already. I asked the girl if I can bring it back if this is the case? She said nope, because the item has to be unsealed and suitable for resale. I questioned that. She then went on to lecture me on the practicalities of how she'd worked there for 22 years and "obviously" they wouldn't be able to sell it if it was unsealed. Obviously that's not the case and many retailers take stuff back unsealed including my past 50 years experiences with Argos, and in case of Amazon they don't even care if you return it without the box, but I didn't want to argue and kept short of telling her that I have been buying and returning stuff to Argos for longer than she's been alive. Ultimately I asked if I can have a refund then in case it didn't work. She then went on to tell me that it should work and in her 22 years she's never had one returned for this reason. Obviously I insisted on a refund. Ultimately I'm wondering whether Argos do take returns of unsealed items, or maybe my decades of buying confidence in Argos is totally misplaced and she's right? If so I'll now steer clear of Argos and stick to shopping with Amazon and Tesco

That's interesting. They do state that if you've changed your mind (which you have done) then it needs to be returned unused. And in "re-sealable condition". That suggests that you could in fact use it, as long as you then factory reset it, and carefully put the stickers etc back over the joins of the box. I don't expect they'd be too strict about this, as long as the box isn't ripped or damaged, and all the interior packaging (plastic, foam) is as it was.

This has been discussed several times on this board.
AIUI the correct legal view is that Argos's click and collect is still a distance contract hence you can exercise your right to cancel a distance contract under The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013
Argos can't prevent you from exercising that right, but they might be able to reduce your refund insofar as unsealing the item could be deemed to be "excessive handling". *
If you do wnat to cancel you will need to escalate to a member of Argos staff who actually understands the correct position. Obvious;y Argos will want to prevent you exercising any right to cancel
*FWIW I'd argue you are still entitled to a full refund

And in "re-sealable condition".
Saleable, not sealable.

Actually the Argos returns mentions "un-used", so I wouldn't be able to find it whether it not it works, so not in a position to buy it. Not when I can have it delivered from Amazon and return it if it doesn't "perform as expected"

I didn't realise that click and collect was treated as distance selling, but if it does, those regs do allow you to open/examine the product? I did try to contact Argos to verify their return policy but they didn't answer 🤔
Ultimately it seems my 45 year confidence in buying/returning from Argos is misplaced, and relegated to my no buy list along with Currys, so I'll shift all my buying to Amazon and Tesco where I do feel confident to return
