What am I sharing (apart from the pics) when I post pics publicly
How do I minimise the information posting a photo on a public forum make available.
I can see location and I have turned that off
Thank you.

Some public forums automatically strip all the EXIF data but not all do
In principle it can contain details on the camera, exposure settings, date/time taken, GPS, resolution, white balance, colour space, copyright owner, creator name, software edited with, date created, date modified etc
If you are using windows you can just right click on the file and tell it to remove all properties and personal data

Thank you @MyRealNameToo I use an iPhone. Do you know how to do what you describe on that?

Create a shortcut that converts the image to (eg) JPEG, toggle off "Preserve metadata".

You can use Shortcuts to create a tool that copies photos and strips them of their meta data in the process… a google will give you the instructions. Alternatively there are apps you can get that will do the same

No matter what you do it is possible that someone may be able to identify the location or even the person - That's life.
Over 50 years ago I visited Cascais, Portugal - Some years later I saw a poster advertising Xpelair fans. I kept thinking I know that place and then one day it cam to me. It was the beachfron at Cascais except they had reversed the picture and the view was of a bar I had visited. so really the answer is - no matter what you do somebody might do so.

Watch the geoguessers at work, one popped up recently where people had sent them photo's
dating back to the 2nd world war and he found the exact spot the pictures were taken.
If it's outside then there is a chance they can find the location, amazing how they track the
location using the suns shadows etc.
Years back there was an eclipse best seen in the US and someone posted a picture that had a tiny
section of the road and then just dirt and hills in the background. Someone found the spot to within
3 feet of where he actually took the picture with no EXIF data.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Most eclipses can be predicted accurately as they follow a certain cycle. This can apply both backwards and forwards, so for location figuring out where Joe Bloggs was during an eclipse, if the path of the eclipse is available or can be worked out, it narrows down the amount of work required to figure out where it was taken, even more so if it mostly went across water.
For everything else though, given enough time, information and resources it's not impossible to figure out where something was taken if you're that bothered. Even if the area has been razed and completely redeveloped. Normally the road layout (for main roads) remains mostly constant and you can see on old maps what are now dual carriageways or major A roads often started off as single dirt roads that have been there for sometimes a century or two.
