Uswitch Collective Switch with EDF - different rates showing

I did the collective switch with USwitch for EDF

But the tariff rates showing on my EDF account subsequently are higher (by 2p/day and 1p/night)

My confirmation email from USwitch does show the lower rates which I thought I'd switched in to.

I've emailed both companies and am awaiting responses. Of course I can cancel and do another comparison.

But I wondered how common this "error"might be, and how often energy companies get away with this sort of practice, especially with nonMSE people.

One has to be constantly vigilant, and of course this practice invalidates the whole point of doing a comparison and searching for a good rate.

It's not very common but mistakes to occasionally occur. Hope you get it sorted soon.

I advise against cancelling & re-applying. Doing the same thing and getting a different outcome is an even rarer occurrence.

ETA: also that tariff is planned to be taken off sale very soon (if not already done so)

Exactly 2p and 1p, or just close to that?

Have you checked that you're allowing for VAT?

The different rates are not due to VAT, I should have said initially.

I had considered the possible issue of VAT, but uSwitch quote prices inclusive of VAT

I've got a response from EDF, who say that the reason the prices are showing as higher is because the "direct debit discount" hasn't yet been applied, but will show the correct prices once the account is fully set up.

It seems to be a strange reason for causing confusion, and nowhere in the switching information does it mention anything of this quirk.

Separately, EDF has today launched a good referral offer - £75 to the person referred and £100 to the person referring.

I'm considering cancelling the Uswitch switch and, a few days later, using my brother's referral link as this provides a better overall benefit. The person on EDF chat (based in South Africa, it seems!) says, though, that I wouldn't be classed as a new customer as my details will be on the system despite having cancelled and not been a customer.

I don't think that's the case, that it's not in the spirit of the referral offer, and that very often telephone assistants are not savvy with pertinent fine and detailed issues .

    Any advice from knowledgeable MSErs?

You should have received a welcome pack (via email) from EDF that states the details of the tariff EDF have put you on. The prices in the welcome pack will include VAT.

You won't be able to get the collective switch tariff via a personal referral code. EDF tariffs on offer direct are not very attractive currently.

The t&cs of the EDF referral scheme are here:

EDF Refer a Friend Terms and Conditions | EDF

don't worry about the start date. Those are the current t&cs, only the value of the referral (not stated in the t&cs) is something that changed today for a limited period.

According to the t&cs the new customer must not have been a customer of EDF within the last 12 months or currently live at a property supplied by EDF.

Ah yes, the EDF welcome pack does have the correct tariff prices. My EDF online account has higher prices which they say will correct once the direct debit is set up.

For the "cancel and use referral link", I realise I won't get the Collective Switch rates, but EDF's ordinary offering is just a bit more for the day rate (and the same for night and SC) and thus the total £175 referral reward easily makes up for this.

So would I be seen as a new customer who'd qualify for the referral rewards in this instance? I can't agree, I don't think, that EDF merely having my details from a prior proposed switch that was cancelled early would make me a "customer" under their reward terms and conditions.

You've already apparently discussed this with EDF and they have provided you a very clear answer.

Sometimes it's best not to ask the question. Your telephone call was recorded for security, quality, and training purposes, as you would have been advised before discussing anything.

I don't know which supply region you are in, but I just checked the Eastern supply region at random and see the peak rate is just over 10% higher and the low rate is just under 10% higher.

Just for the record, EDF always have a referral scheme available, and it's usually £50 per referrer and referred, so £100 total. (They often increase these amounts as they have done today, for a limited period)
