DWP asking for my bank details re my dead mothers Assistance Allowance

I’ve received a letter from the DWP for my bank account details to be sent back to them by post.

1. I am not happy sending these details to them by post.

And

2. Why are they asking me for my details.

I presume be assistance allowance you mean attendance allowance.

The only reason I can think of is that they owe the estate money and need your details to pay what is owed. AA is paid in errears so this can happen.

Why are you worried about providing those details, they are the same ones printed on cheques.?

Presumably they want to send you money. Are you objecting to that?

they probably owe the estate money and the account they used to put it in is now frozen so they need to ask where to send it

My husband died a few years ago in the autumn. His state pension was paid 4 weekly in arears, so fairly soon after I registered his death DWP wrote and asked for details of who and where to pay the pension he was due from his last payment and date of death. I also received a tax rebate as he got a full years tax allowance, not pro rata to the date of death. Another pleasant surprise was receiving his Winter Fuel Payment in January.

My husband did receive Attendance Allowance, but I think this was paid in advance. He received a weekly payment 2 days after he died, and before I could register his death. I was asked for this back months after his death, but paid it easily by phone.

The details they ask for are what is written on a cheque, or you give to receive a bank transfer, they don't enable anyone to withdraw money. If you are uncomfortable sending details in the post, ask if there is another way to submit these. Alternatively do you have a different account to your main one where you can receive the estate money?
