Best haggling strategies

From a main dealer you might not get price reduced but if you can get extended warranty and/or servicing included then that could have a similar effect. VW were offering 2 years warranty and 2 services when you took out their finance deals on used vehicles. Means I'm covered until the car is 10 years old and has already paid for £1500 of repairs.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
There are likely to be a lot of car exchanges towards the end of this month as that is when “new plates” come out. I don’t know whether that means a better deal or not.
FWIW at the end of November 2024, a main dealer knocked £4K off the windscreen price of a new car (was £32K before discount), that was without haggling.
Discounts and “free” extras depend on what stock a dealer needs to shift.
Keep your hands in your pockets and be prepared to walk away, ie try to not get excited when you see a shiny motor.

Good, well priced, secondhand cars don't hang around these days.
Just bought a town runaround for the OH (Nissan Micra, Top of the range, automatic, late 2014, 32k, FSH from a dealer for 7k.
When I viewed it, the day it was first advertised, it had bad lacquer peel on the roof, and the dealer said that without haggling it, it would be re-sprayed before purchase.
It also had a cherished plate left on it since valued at nearly 4k !!!!!!!!! ( I believe it was an elderly, deceased owners family the dealer bought it off, which is likely why the personalised vrm was left on it).
I didn't haggle or tyre kick, and agreed to buy immediately after a test drive.
TThe Dealer told me when I collected it a few days later after being serviced and MOT'd the phone hadn't stopped ringing about it, and could have sold it 4 times over.
He said small (1.2L), low'ish miles, petrol automatics with low tax (£35 a,year) fly off the forecourt, especially if they are automatic.

Did you get the plate in the sale?
Sell that and you've had a bargain car for £3k.
Winner :)

Don't worry, the plate won't be worth £4k. If you got a valuation from the likes of regtransfer.co.uk, its just to get you to go with them (they'll want all the relevant documents), it will actually be worth about half that. Still, £2000 isn't to be sniffed at!
