Gadget insurance or home insurance

Good Morning, my son is at Uni and we are wonder whether it is better to insure his many costly electronic devices on a separate policy.

Our house insurance does cover these but if we made a claim it would affect our premium.

Is it more cost effective to pay for separate insurance or take the hit on our house insurance premium.

Any advice appreciated.

Thank you.

what is your excess? Might not be worth claiming. He should take out his own insurance to cover all of his possessions really

He should have a policy covering his things at his term time address, he could then add gadget insurance on to this policy. Stand alone gadget insurance is not as common as it used to be.

Have a look for Student insurance - this is probably the right thing to cover possessions including gadgets both in halls/student digs and at "home" in the holidays.

Either are possible solutions but if you do go for the "gadget" insurance make sure you understand the terms properly. Home insurance is often on a new for old basis so if you break your laptop you get a brand new one of equivalent spec whereas gadget insurance can be on a pure indemnity basis so you get paid out on what a 5 year old iPad would have sold for on eBay not the price of a new iPad.

One counter point can be the excess on gadget policies can be notably lower but having said that the cost of lowering an excess on a home insurance policy is often not as expensive as most think it will be.
