Council Tax Query - Reduction?
Hi,
We are privately renting and currently we are a total of 5 adults (2 married couples) and 1 child living in a 4 bed property, we are all related (family).
We (5 adults) are all on the tenancy agreement. However in the next few months 2 adults (1 married couple) will be moving. We will therefore need the tenancy agreement adjusted which isn't an issue.
However when we moved in, we didn't deal with setting up the council tax/other bills, it was done for us by an agency - we deal directly with the landlord not with the agency. The council tax bill is in my name and my relatives (from the other couple) just the two of us on it. Is it possible to have a total of 3 names on there or will it just be 2? I.e. once they moved out, I would like my name, my wifes and the other relative for UC purposes.
Also how would I go about checking whether we may potentially qualify for a council tax discount? I would be the only person working full-time, we get a top-up from UC with standard allowance/housing cost and 1 child maintenance. My relative works part-time and also on UC and gets a top up similar to us minus the 1 child maintenance.
As there are 2 different UC claims i.e. myself as a couple and then other relative as an individual, would we both make an application for council tax reduction or just one of us?
Many thanks for any insight.

You can add or remove name's, have you used the calculators. I'm not sure if a single occupant would be entitled to the 25% reduction I don't think so. Wait until the change happens remember to submit all documents requested well everything relevant even if they've previously seen them.
Entitled to or Turn2us. You can input your combined household income to see if you qualify.

You could try updating your UC claims to claim council tax reduction. You would have to explain to the council your set up and I guess they'd work out if you're entitled to any reduction.

My understanding is that the council set up any deduction from council tax and that to some degree the reductions vary from council to council depending on the reason for the deduction.
Council tax is set on the property and based on 2 adults living there. (Hence if you were single and only one adult living there youd get a single person discount) So the fact that 5 adults live in the property at present means you bill is set at 2 adults. How you split the costs is your buisness.
Once you are down to two adults, you need to work out who is left in the proprty and their entitlement to a discount. At which point your will need to apply for a discount through your council.

Ah perfect for the names as that is an important part of verifying eligibility if eligible.
I have used those calculators previously but not recently, also not sure if the response would be correct as the situation is quite specific with there being two separate UC claims i.e. couple and then single individual so not sure whether one or either has any impact or negates the other in regards to eligibility?
Probably best way to do it.
We will be down to 3 adults and 1 child in total.
