Because they have already tried to fix it twice and their head office has said that the latest faults (despite being exactly the same as the earlier ones) have nothing to do with the initial fault. So, basically, they cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

They have had two opportunities to fix the car. If I give it back to them, how does my wife get to work?

What outcome do you want?
If they fix it again, it's going into garage. If you reject it. Then you need to take it back. Either way you are without a car.
There is no right to a temp car, while work is done on the car. Going to court is not a quick process & runs the risk they shut up shop, leaving you with no car & no money.
Only other option is to P/X the car for another.

I didn't say let them fix it. They want to inspect it for the OP to reject it. Get an independant report done first so you can prove them wrong if they say it's not related. Also helps if it gets to SCC.
