Pasted content shows as code (grey background)

If you copy text and paste it into the forum, it can appear as normal text, but sometimes it shows with a grey background:

What seems to be happening here is that if you’re precise when selecting text to copy, it will usually copy just the text. But if you position your cursor more roughly, it may (in the background) copy more than the text and interpret it as code, which it then displays differently.

In this GIF, for the second copy, I positioned my pointer much higher than the text and then dragged much lower than the end:
