Off on a holiday of a lifetime but just had skin cancer diagnosis

Hi,

So in 6 weeks time I'm off to The Maldives to celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary.

Last week I had a dermatologist confirm I have a basal cell carcinoma on my face.

She said it was ok to wait until I return from the trip to have it removed.

My worry is regarding travel insurance (already in place). If I tell them, can they stop me from going or will they just 'whack up' the premium.

I would be ever so grateful if anyone could offer me some advice please

Thank you

    You have to tell them.

You can't risk getting ill from any cause and being rejected when they find out you have not disclosed everything.

Plus having a diagnosis is a positive. It’s when you’re waiting for tests that there’s more likely to be a problem insurance wise.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

You have to tell them but it is highly unlikely that they will cancel your policy. I have had several BCCs over the years and they have never resulted in cancellations or increases in premiums.

I was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 - a tumour on my kidney. The surgeons arranged the op for after I was due back from my 2 week holiday in Europe. The insurance company just excluded that condition from my cover.

That's different with my insurer my Prostate means they will not cover any health claims at all.

My wife with Dementia is the same because of it they will not cover any health issue.

Many thanks for all the comments.

I've contacted my dermatologist to see what is on my medical notes as thinking about it, she can't be sure it's 'cancerous' until it's had a biopsy which will be after my trip.

I want to do the right thing but don't want to jeopeordise my holiday 😕

If you have a diagnosis of  basal cell carcinoma then unfortunately it is cancer but thankfully it's not one that metastasise normally.

Looking at a random travel insurer saying you have a diagnosis of skin cancer/  basal cell carcinoma and that the lump/lesion hasn't been removed added about 33% to the quote -v- declaring having no conditions.

Your policy document should tell you if you have to advise them of any changes.

Most do, but LV , apparently, state you dot to tell them.

You need to check the position with whoever you are insured with.

If you do not tell them and you make a claim for anything which involves a. Medical claim the insurance company will request your medical records from your GP and discover the omission. That could lead to your policy being voided and no payout.

If your current insurers won't cover you, you could consider another policy, declaring the new condition. Good idea to check the wording with your consultant too. We use a company called insuracewith.com who specialise in covering people with a medical condition. Their prices are very reasonable, and screening questions online actually relating to the condition.

It must have been a very stressful time for you, so hopefully you will fully enjoy your special holiday.
