Understanding question from late Grandparent's pension provider

I thought pensions sat outside inheritance for probate. Have I got that wrong? If I have, it would certainly provide an explanation.

Pensions normally do, if you are talking about a widow(er) getting a spousal benefit etc. The exception is if there is no spouse, dependent or child and the pension either has a death benefit or a guarantee. In the absence of an obvious that should inherit it then it gets paid to the estate.

Ahhh ok. Explanations to both my questions cleared up now.
Thank you all so much. I now have some answers for Dad should he fetch it up again.

I guess you could let him put "NOYBB, just stop paying the pension" as an answer if it would make him happier. And raise a complaint.
I've just ranted at a couple of companies about their perceived failure to meet my needs. It'll do no good whatsoever but it made me happier ...

Yes NOYBB
Followed by "I have told you that this person has died. This is so you can stop paying the pension. If you choose not to stop then that is not my problem and I you have been informed of the death"

We had this with fathers pension. Capita took 6 months to pay £500. They caused the underpayment by clawing back final pension payment made before he passed away after when bank account was frozen. We had 2x 8 page forms to complete the extors had to send proof of address for their address and the deceased address and ID wet signatures and NI letters showing extors numbers. Copy of Will deceased wife will original Probate Death certificate deceased wife death certificate. This was all sent and the requests would change and they would add extra requests when we periodically chased them up. Sent over 4 lots of recorded delivery to them. They were just making it up as they went along eventually paid amount less £20 no idea why as no paperwork from them just paid it into bank. I feel your pain as it makes no sense at all. I tried to initiate SAR request and raise complainted sent by recorded delivery but they ignored. It all left a bad taste in my mouth.

Curiousity question if anyone knows.
After filling in the missing details myself and saying to Dad sign here, he was sent a cheque for money owed to Nan around £100ish.
However he's since had another letter saying that there is still a surplus and the trustees have agreed to pay it to Dad so can he please supply his bank details and send back (I am paraphrasing though Ive seen the letter).
Dad has the view of - why cant they also send him a cheque for this and am I sure its not a scam from someone wanting his bank details
DH (who double checked the info to reassure Dad) has the optimistic view that maybe the sum payable is too large for a cheque to be sent.
Myself had the more pessimistic view that its so small its not worth wasting putting a stamp on.
So who is likely to be right (hopefully not Dad!)?
For info I suspect this is a DB pension purely because Grandad became an invalid following a stroke in the early 80s. He died in the mid 90s and Nan had the widow pension from it (or whatever it's technical term is) from then on, so for over 29 years.

Are you able to find the scheme rules online?

I cant remember the pension provider name unfortunately. Would rather not make Dad concerned why Im asking.
We'll find out in due course, I was just being curious to see if Im going to get a call saying 'you wont believe how much has just been paid out' or 'theyve put 65p in my account'

There isn't any "scam" which involves someone merely having your account number and sort code.
