Hi

Advice needed thanks. My mother had her car MOT a couple of years ago and has recently realised that they had put the wrong mileage on the certificate as it was less than the previous year. How can she rectify this or where could she go to for advice? Many thanks

My first port of call would be to contact the place who did the MOT, and maybe they can rectify it on the system and re-issue you an MOT certificate. I believe they input the mileage whilst they're creating the online certificate, so they might be able to make a correction, or possibly they'll say just bring it in for the next one and they'll rectify then. I have seen MOT historys before which have a sudden dip or spike in mileage, so it must happen to others sometimes

  • If this happened a couple of years ago, presumably the MOT for subsequent years have the correct mileage? If so, does it matter if one old MOT has an incorrect mileage?

pretty sure the mileage can’t be rectified after this amount of time that has passed. And as has been said it won’t matter if subsequent tests are recorded correctly

I believe if its within 28 days, the MoT test centre can amend the record. Over 28 days and you need to go to DVSA, with evidence of the correct mileage (for example if the car was serviced at the same time, and/or there was a garage invoice with the correct mileage).

I expect that if someone was to get a report for the car it could show up as a question on mileage and may deter a future buyer. If the car is only cheap, a future buyer will ignore and so would not worry. If the car is very valuable then as stated above try to contact DVSA with evidence.
