Although I agree with the main point you're making, it is worth noting that the Welfare Reform Act 2007 does/did use those terms.

I can't find any mention of "Groups" in the 2007 act. (I'm currently on my phone in hospital so the text in the legislation is a bit small). Do you have the provision/clause references.

However provisions 8 & 9 of the 2007 WRA which deal with assessments are respectively entitled: "Limited Capability for Work" and "Limited Capability for Work and Work Related Activity".

Those two terms for the awards have been consistent for ESA and now UC.

As I said, I do agree with your point that it is LCW and LCWRA which is relevant, but the term "support group" is used in a few places, and is defined (by reference to LCWRA) in s. 24(4).

"Work-related activity group" is not ever used, to my knowledge.

However, the components have always been referred to as the "support component" and the "work-related activity component". See s. 2(2)-(3) and s. 4(4)-(5).

When they abolished the work-related activity component, they omitted s. 2(3) and s. 4(5).

The last time I remember the groups being made a thing of was around 2016, post moving people from older benefits to ESA, sorting the money underpayments, and those who would be better protected from new assessments and conditions that won't improve or deteriorate. Those people with LCWRA would not face assessments. Then they went on to do mass assessments. Plus then paying what they failed to test people's entitlement to income related correctly moving from incapacity benefit etc.
