    Family member kept their maiden name, over 40 years ago. Not a problem. Children are in his surname. Joint accounts are Mr A B and Ms CD.

    Another couple our age hyphenated their (short) surnames for their children. They did need notes about that in all their passports as neither child had the same surname as their parents. I recall another couple you used mum's surname for girls and dad's for boys.

    On a day to day basis, utilities and the like the first couple are accustomed to Mr and Mrs AD, BD, CA and CB depending on the day of the week. It's a bit more difficult with on-line banking but they've mainly got joint accounts. Obviously, for Identity Verification, the joint bank statements are useful.
