Laptops Buying Advice

Hi,

I'm hoping to purchase a laptop in the sales but thought I'd ask for your views on what makes I should avoid & which makes you recommend?
Have you come across any particular models that you'd recommend or definately not recommend!?

I'm looking for a standard laptop for going online, writing & putting my home videos & photos on for under £450 (under £400 would be better!). I know you can get good deals ordering laptops online but I'd feel happier to buy one in person which I know restricts me somewhat.

Among some I'm considering are: Toshiba (although someone has told me they have problems with motherboards & overheating??), Acer, HP & Phillips.
Any comments on the above or any other makes very welcome as I'm getting totally confused!!!!

Gateway, Samsung and Lenovo were PC Pro Award winners 2007. HP business models are good.

Just so long as you steer clear of PC World and Currys:eek:

    I have a
    Toshiba(2.5 yrs old- from currys)
    HP laptop(month old- PC world)

Both are excellent. get a computer with good specs so that it will last longer. you can even try Dell.

if you want to buy one in person, you can go to PC world and currys. make sure you bargain and ask for free accessories along with it. check what free accessories you get with both stores.

    A decent laptop specs

processor speed - 1.8 ghz or more
    RAM - 1gb or more
har drive - 120 gb or more

these are just few specs for your help choosing one.

I prefer an Intel processor than AMD or ubuntu. you can check with others what they think. windows vista is also good. go for home premium.

If you are going for Vista - then go for 2GB RAM rather than 1GB.

Not wanting to hi-jack this thread but can anyone recommend shops/sites for refurbished models. The wife wants one just to browse/email without having to sit in front of this desk ;) so I was thinking that as long as it's got a wireless networking card the remaining specs aren't really important.

As you can get brand new laptops for under £300 I was looking to spend probably about half that. Is this reasonable or even possible?

    Thanks,

morgan computers in manchester or ebay.

also, cause of the bad results for dixons group, you can expect some really good deals in the next few weeks/months as retailers try to clear stocks.
puter sales were very bad over the xmas period. it does seem as though the lappy market is now saturated.
    Get some gorm.
