New road tax VED rates to kill big classics?

That is the correct info at the moment. The original question was about the rates from April, which have not been announced.

True that they haven't been announced hence the scaremongering nonsense not being correct. Equally the government have not said that the band K maximum is being abolished. Either way these posts like the RAC suggesting by omission that the tax will go up to £790 are not supported by the facts.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.2 -
You're right there. I bought a 2.8 Capri in 1984 and it cost me £8k when my annual salary was about £12k. Fortunately it was a company car so I didn't have to fork out for it myself.
For many years, decent ones still sold for around £8k then the bubble arrived about 10 years ago.

How appealing the cars with approaching £800 tax bills will be as classics -considering you can either buy one registered before 23rd March 2006 and be capped at Band K or buy an April 2017 on one and pay £200 - is a valid question but there are no retrospective changes. Even one subject to the Expensive Car Supplement is a better bet than a March 2006 - March 2017 one considering that the tax is still lower with an active ECS on it and that ECS comes with an expiry date.
How many classics will there be that were never available on either of the more favourable systems? 1 generation per car maybe?
April 2026 rates now confirmed:

Indeed, "there are no retrospective changes" - and there never have been. These are just 11yrs of cars that have been very high VED since they were new, because they were very high CO2. In 2016, a decade ago, they were over £500. In fact, the VED bands have only really increased by inflation since these cars were new.
If somebody's going to be preserving these as "future classics", they'll likely be spending years at a time SORNed.
But, of course, that hasn't stopped the likes of the Daily Mail leaping on a scaremongery bandwagon.2
