Nationwide Standing Order Query
I have a standing order of £250 every month from Nationwide to Skipton BS. I've just checked and last month's payment did not reach Skipton. However, there are both payments to and from Skipton for £250. I've used the help facility and been told that the transaction failed due to insufficient funds. This doesn't make sense to me as if I hadn't sufficient funds there would be zero transactions, not two, and I would have received a notification (I didn't). The agent was at a loss to explain so I'm going to have to ring them tomorrow for an explanation.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? And yes, I know I should pay more attention to my transactions!

Have you checked your on line statements to see what your balance was that day?

Yes, but there is money flying left, right and centre due to all my beginning-of-month financial chicanery. I was in credit at times and not in credit at times - without timestamps, I'm lost.
I'm just concerned that they made the payment, then took it back yet didn't have the grace to notify me.

Just had another thought, did you buy fuel from a self serve around that time where you have to put your card in etc before you can draw any fuel. Some of them will pre authorise £100 before you fill up which hangs around on your account as reserved funds for a few days

Alternatively was this to a regular saver and bounced back if you sent it early as I've had that before. That would explain the sending and recieving element as you're correct if insufficient funds I'd expect the send to fail.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I didn't buy any fuel that day and it wasn't sent early to Skipton - I don't know the ins and out of how they work these things but I do know that this DD, even though it's set for the first of the month, only 'fires' on the first working day of the month - as I said, I've no idea how this happens as both Nationwide and Skipton must okay this flexibility, surely? The day when banking really is 24x7 and that all legacy systems have been updated can't come soon enough. A weekend or bank holiday really should make no difference in this day and age.
Anyway, back to my issue. I'm never going to know as I really can't face the hassle of ringing them (the fact that most banks don't seem to offer email addresses for this sort of issue is beyond disgraceful) as I'm not sure my blood pressure would take it! Skipton are very flexible and have allowed me to make January's payment in February so I'm only going to lose a small amount of interest. Irritating, but I can live with it.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to vent my frustration!
