Paypal payment error, F& F

I'm trying to establish if a payment made through Paypal was made in error for Friends and Family as the seller of the item we wanted has not sent the item, or responded to questions as to where it is - on my partner's account the F&F option always comes up highlighted first which is hugely annoying as its very rare we'd pay that way, and on this occasion she had asked me to pay for an item as she had poor internet connection, its possible i hadn't chosen to correct tab. Is there some way we can see if it was a regular payment or not, as it doen't seem to be very clear on the payment page if it is? Or would we have to call them.

Thanks

I’m assuming this is a personal sale, ie not through eBay or similar. It should be clear from the transaction what sort of payment it was . However a quick way to check would be to see if a case can be opened, if it can then it’s a safe G and S payment, if not then it’s a gift f and f payment.

I haven’t used PayPal direct for a while but another way used to be to see if the sellers address came up. For a G and s payment it should show sellers details.

Unfortunatelythat process is what we have just done this morning, this individual was paid F&F by mistake and now isn't responding.

That’s a shame, I just hope it wasn’t a great deal of money . If it happened to be through a Facebook group then at least report to admin so they can remove the person and potentially save other buyers.

Sadlly, a common issue. For future note anyone asking for payment that way should be avoided. Would be fairly safe you are picking up & paying for the item at the same point.

just to say, there is a common misconception that PayPal-F&F completely protect sellers from fraud. It doesn’t.

buyers (those who sends the funds) can lie, state they didn’t authorise a payment and instantly get their money back. A very long time ago, it happened to me and I had to phone PayPal to get the funds back.

    - if they seller doesn’t respond or send the item, phone PayPal and state what happened. They will probably investigate the seller for fraud.

Yes we warn sellers on here that f and f payments can be an issue for sellers, however the buyer in these cases needs to convince the bank that they didn’t authorise the payment, and that it was somehow paid fraudulently. It isn’t sufficient to merely claim the seller defrauded them, that’s what all the warnings about f and f are for.
