Need to make laptop screen video?

Hi,

Do you know of any good free software that i can use to make a "youtube" video of me demonstrating how to make a PCB in Altium?

I also need it to have audio aswell so i can say eg "i am also pressing CTRL key when i do this"...etc etc.

Preferably it would be a screen recorder which i can stop and start so that i can build the video up bit-by-bit rather than go through it all in one go.

Any screen recorder will do it, most will record audio as well either from whatever on the screen or any other source.

Something like OBS Studio should do what you want:

However you may want to record audio separately (or export it) and edit it in Audacity, especially if you're prone to stutter/stammer or just say "erm" a lot, as that may make you come across as a bit hesitant :)

There's a reason why there's an ADR process in film/TV - and its not just to hide microphones.

Also a video editor to put it all together and look semi-decent, something like Openshot for example to mix your video, your audio, cover up any cuts with transitions, etc.

Do any of the responses from entering "screen recorder" into a popular internet search engine meet your needs?

Thanks yes i saw OBS studio but it doesnt allow you to splice a bit of video into the video, eg say if you forgot something in the middle and you want to "stitch it in"…also the ability to join two separate videos together to make a single video seems absent.

Our (frequently used) process is to record in OBS, and when all the pieces of video are made including the additional bit to stitch in, edit in openshot. And Audacity is our go-to for audio editing.

It means that you need to get to know 3 packages, but they're reasonable instinctive and Openshot handles transitions well. You might want to (re)record the audio once the video is finished so that you can script it to fit the edited-down visuals?

OBS is the 'go to' and I'd certainly recommend overdubbing once you have the video edited. Trying to demo software, speak coherently and record at the same time for more than a few minutes is not easy.

Thanks, ive had a few trial tuns with OBS, and the sound is really bad…ive adjusted all the audio settings and still cant really hear myself…its blurry and seems to go quiet then loud…..i think ill have to buy a microphone instead of using the laptop microphone?

If you are planning to make the video to share and achieve good "viewability", then a good quality noise-cancelling microphone is essential.

You will also probably achieve better results if you can over-dub the commentary after recording the video. That way, you are concentrating on one thing at a time.

You could always get a sound recorder app on your mobile phone, record into that and then connect the phone to the computer to copy it off, then use Audacity to edit it required, and OBS to stick the whole project together.

Laptop microphones built in are hit and miss, they're probably fine for something like Teams or Zoom but pretty much useless for anything else.

Thanks, but for now, will this £5 USB microphone be any good for putting into the laptop…
