Phasing out of Scottish banknotes in Scotland
There seems to be a new thing in Scotland now since end if last year where the cash machines only issue Bank of England notes now. I can’t see anything online about it.
Have they now finished and we are moving to just one type of note?

Given that Scottish notes are created by the retail banks (unlike England), I'd have thought issuing English notes would be a good money saving?

There are lots of cash machines so a general statement.
I have Bank of Scotland notes in wallet just taken from an "Autoteller" now know as "cashpoint" since Lloyds took over.
Lloyds ruined the TSB and are doing same with the Bank of Scotland and the Halifax.

How did they ruin TSB?

Because the speedbank became a cashpoint.

And HBOS ruined itself.

If it were a simple matter of saving money then of course the Scottish note issuers would have stopped years ago.
What they will have done is costed this saving against the marketing/advertising value of having bits of polymer with the bank's name on in people's pockets and tills, and maybe a bit of extra footfall into branches.
The intangible bit is what the public backlash and possible boycott of the first "Scottish" bank that decides to stop note production would cost, both in tangible loss of business and goodwill.
Anyone know if there were many protests when AIB/First Trust stopped banknote production of NI notes in 2020? Rather different attitudes towards English/Irish notes I assume

I wonder if Virgin money, now owned by Nationwide, are looking at the value of issuing their own notes. Clydesdale was known to be a Scottish bank with a Scottish identity. I'm not sure there were ever any Virgin branded notes, and I'm not sure Nationwide notes would work well as not clearly Scottish.

I think it would need a change in the law for Virgin to issue banknotes, because it's regulated by Act of Parliament. Anyway, why would they want to? Nationwide are going to phase out the Virgin Money brand altogether.
Clydesdale still issue them.

Maybe it's just in Edinburgh that it has changed as I've used various ATMs including Bank of Scotland and they all produce English notes now. This is into all different parts of the city.

Danske Bank is not clearly Northern Irish but it doesn't seem to stop them.
