Paste no longer works in the RTE

What I did:

Copied text to clipboard and then tried to paste using Ctrl-V, or right click paste from the menu, or pasted from the Windows clipboard manager (Windows key-V) and many more inventive things I can think of

What Should happen:

Text should appear in the RTE

What happened:

Nothing

Why it matters:

The inability to paste makes the site almost unusable. For instance:

MSE SS.jpg

I can paste into Chrome

I can paste into other dialogs, just not the RTE

MSE SS.jpg

Device/Browser:

Windows 11/Firefox 147.02 64 bit. FF has been updated/reinstalled

I have removed all add-ons and extensions. I have used troubleshooting mode which disables all extensions etc, ignores CSS and much more

Apologies, I don't want to be 'that bloke' but I am employing the old adage that the noisiest wheel receives some oil

I know my issue seems to be unique to me and it seems I am in the 'too awkward' box but I hold out hope for some kind of resolution

Many thanks

Excellent, if you know what I mean. You are the first other person I have seen report this

Have you tried any of my approaches above? The Windows clipboard manager (Windows key-V)? Pasting into different dialogues such as 'Insert Media'? Starting FF in Troubleshooting mode?

Could you confirm the same Windows on a laptop/workstation (not phone) and FF setup as I have?

It might be worth right-clicking and selecting "Inspect" and switching to the Console tab to check for any relevant errors or warnings. I see a couple of errors related to an "Invalid color detected", but nothing else (paste functioning for me).

Thanks for that @masonic, I did briefly look there Tuesday but saw nothing obvious (I can see the same invalid colour report as you) but I'll pursue it further in lieu of any alternative course of action

Hey! My spell checker still works

In the absence of explicit errors, my best guess is that this is a timing issue. The RTE essentially hijacks a normal input field on the page and injects a much more sophisticated widget that attaches various listeners for mouse and keyboard actions. It is probably intercepting pastes so that it can re-render the content in a compatible format, but somewhere along the line it is falling over.

This sort of thing can sometimes be ineffective under really specific scenarios. For example, a couple of months ago I saw a related issue in a web app that affected a certain laptop trackpad due to the delay between a left mouse click and the event being registered in the browser. Essentially a dropdown list was being closed before the selected item was registering the click, so affected users couldn't select anything. It was easily solved by making the event triggering more robust once diagnosed. Only 1 user among 150 was affected.

The listener seems to be active. If I highlight and paste over Jill …

    Before paste:
Jack and Jill go up the hill

    After paste:
Jack and go up the hill

In OOP terms I am guessing, but do not know, that the RTE is a subclass of a more fundamental class used for the simpler entry box in the Insert Media dialogue, or for that matter the thread title when creating a new thread. Of course that doesn't explain why it works for others

I'd be grateful to hear from second line support at Vanilla, none seems to be forthcoming

    Thanks again

    Hi @ColdIron

Try as I might, I've still not been able to reproduce this.

However, we've heard back that there is caching issue - Some of the issues that have already been reported, such as the Quotes not having a down-arrow sometimes, are actually due to this caching issue that's separate from the Rich editor and is being worked on.

I have fingers crossed that your issue is related and will be resolved.🤞
