removing fire cement from slate?

we have a wood burning stove that was installed by a builder who, despite being a lovely man and [mostly!] very good at what he does, makes a terrible mess.
as you can see, he has made a real mess around the flue with the fire cement... this was not immediately apparent at the time as it was the same colour when applied, but as it has dried, it has shown up, and, well it looks terrible!!
how can we remove the excess without damaging the slate? i was wondering if carefully applied brick acid would work, but then it might damage the slate... as would a chisel... any ideas guys?
thanks

I cant believe he left it like that. but i assume he was just a builder and not a hetas approved installer?
Did he leave you with a hetas certificate?
if you do not have a certificate then you need to get a building control officer in asap to sign it off to make it a legal install.
Fire cement comes off easily enough but either way it shouldnt have been done like that0 -
he was just a builder, i have no idea about the certificate/building control as it it my boyfriend's house, but everything else has been done by the book so i imagine that this would be too...i'll ask anyway!0
