Cont based ESA help needed
My husband has ben on cont based ESA in the support group for years. We get no income related top up as I work and no rent help.
On sat he recieved a P45 through the post saying his benifit ended 16/1/26. His last payment was 14/1/26.
There was no reason for this, and no letter to inform him of why, just a P45.
His next payment would have been due today. His payment went into his account at the right amount. He was paid £261.03 ESA and £20.07 JSA.
This JSA patent looks to be one day on ESA rate and more than one day JSA rate so I’m guessing he is still receiving ESA?
I would be grateful if anyone can give me advice as to what has happened. He won’t ring the helpline as he is deaf so it stresses him out.

I can't help with the rest but Relay UK is designed to enable people to use the phone even if they can't hear or can't speak very well.
Relay UK (if you cannot hear or speak on the phone): 18001 then 0800 169 0310 -Jobcentre Plus number given for reporting changes to ESA
The new claims line has a different phone number but same Relay UK prefix, 18001. (So just put that 18001 in front of the ESA helpline number if it's different from the numbers above.)

Contributions Based ESA recently converted formally into New Style ESA.
The P45 will be an admin exercise.
The JSA reference is when the DWP have to do a manual payment.
Likely the change caused a blip and the payment was going to be short, so this was picked up and corrected.

thank you.
It would have been helpful if they had told him they were issuing a p45. There wasn’t even a cover letter

He can always write out a letter explaining he is deaf and wants to ask what is happening to ESA claim, as he received a letter from ESA with P45. Make sure he includes full name and National Insurance number.
And take letter into Job Centre and they may be able to explain by writing down what has happened, so he can read it. If the Job Centre cannot explain, they can send the letter onto ESA asking ESA to contact him. If he provides an email address, ESA could then send an explanation.
If he goes into Job Centre he should take some ID with him.
Might not be wise to make assumptions that ESA has transferred to New Style ESA and payment of ESA will continue.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
there was no letter with the p45. Just a p45. His esa ended 16jan going by p45. No reason. No recent assessment, no forms to fill in. If his esa was ended surely thy would have sent a letter first telling him why? That he hadn’t returned the questionnaire in time or the reason?
if esa is paid in arrears then the payment he recieved today should not have been paid surely? Just 2 enough to cover from payment 14 Jan to 16 Jan? he got 2 full weeks of payment. With our job centre there is security at the door and they only let you in if you have a pre booked appointment.

Sounds like administrative issue that has triggered the anomalies here . But suggest taking advice in Altior post of using government website for proof of benefits… see what it generates for ESA. Obviously if cannot do that or contact them etc then fortnight until next payment which should be normal… if yes then chalk it up.. if not normal or missing then raise issue

There will never be a letter with a P45 as its system triggered, it does sound as if there should have been a seperate letter letting him know what is going on though. Personally I would assume that the P45 is admin as a result of the change over, nothing has changed and if payments continue which it seems they will there is no need to stress him out by contacting them.

just updating incase it helps anyone.
My husband had received his esa as expected on 11/2. His account bank says its esa and it’s for the same amount as usual.
