Holding Deposit not returned, dealer blew a gasket!

I don't think there is an elegant way of getting the £500 back. Its worth the legal route, but only after you're at a dead end on direct communications (which seems to have been reached now).
£500 is quite a big deposit to put down for a car unseen. Personally I don't do deposits - I either buy a car, or I don't buy a car. Most of them these days, I buy cheap and unseen. I just take the risk. Appreciate not everyone like that approach though.

It all depends.
Person looks at a car, says to dealer I will go home and think about it, most times that person never returns. Dealer states I can hold it for you for £X, punter agrees. Dealer offered that so punter returns.
