Cable testing okay but CCTV camera not working

Not sure if anyone can help here.

I have a CCTV camera showing video loss. It runs PoE. There are two cables - one from the main machine to outside and an extension to the camera position.

The camera is testing okay from the machine to outside, from the extension to the camera, and the total length from the machine to camera including the extension.

I have replaced the three RJ45 ends anyway (not including the moulded one that goes into the machine) in case they were causing an issue for some reason, although I thought the cable test would have shown this if there was.

It's still not working.

I plugged that cable into another camera and it didn't work on that one either.

It was working fine and just all of a sudden the camera lost the video. It seems to have lost the power in the cable? Is there anything else I can check or a reason it wouldn't work even though it's testing okay?

Have you tried changing the port the cable plugs in to on the recorder, the total length of cable length is it under 100 metres.

The actual ports over time can cause issues , plus if network usage has increased it can also effect signal loss

How old is the actual setup, I only ask as I have replaced 4 of my camera's due to the sensors starting to fail, however they were 10 years old.

Yes I've tried plugging it into a different port and still the same. There are only four cameras and capacity is eight. Total cable length definitely under 100 metres.

Can't remember exactly but the set up is around four years old.

There was enough length in the cable to let me plug it into a working camera and it stopped working. Plugged the camera's original cable back in and it did. There isn't enough give in any other cable to enable me to check the camera showing video loss itself with a cable I know to be working, but it seems to make sense that if the cable didn't work in the other camera it may be this that's the issue? However I don't understand why when I test it it runs the lights 1 through to 8 with no issues. If the cable was faulty it wouldn't do this, would it??

  • Hi it sounds like the cable.

If I were you, I would replace the cable with a moulded Cat 6 cable.

Do not use custom-made cables, as you could still have problems with them even if they check out okay with a tester.

Are these indoor or outdoor cameras?

ie. Will the cables be exposed to the elements?

Any evidence of rodent activity around the area the cables run ?
