Short term: the alternative to airbnb can be a mon-fri lodger with a live in landlord. They accept lower rent in return for getting the place to themselves during the week, plus its less subject to seasonal pricing and you can leave stuff there rather than packing every time.
Long term: If you plan to move the family out of manchester then I'd just move entirely to a reasonable commuter town from your office, not 2 hours away. I'd also rent as a family, as what they think of the local area at weekends etc will tell you more than if you're just renting a room and barely there.
