I follow manufacturers leaflet which says put water in oven tray and heat on 100 oc for 30 minutes this causes steam to loosen dirt. I use wire wool to get stubborn stains off and clean racks which are all removable. But the top of the oven is always a nightmare for me as have to get down on my knees and bend my head up in oven to see the roof to clean.

Some oven instructions advise against putting things on the bottom to line.

I wholeheartedly agree with you about the shortcomings of designers. It's my private theory that no designer ever washes/cleans anything they've dreamed up because if they did they'd soon stop making things so hard to keep clean.

What I don't understand is why products aren't tested in real life situations and amended when the difficulties of cleaning etc. become clear. If a manufacturer advertised their ovens by showing how easy they were to clean and keep clean I'm sure they'd be trampled in the ensuing stampede. I don't think that pyrolytic burn cycle thingy can be good for the thermostat or the air quality in a kitchen so I wouldn't want that sort of feature but panels I could wipe clean using ordinary household detergents I would pay for.

I think Lakeland sell a large oven plastic tray for soaking oven shelves.

Yes I've got one of those. TBH it doesn't help much, it's way too large for my racks, and takes a large number of kettles of boiling water to cover the racks, and because of the large surface area, the water doesn't stay hot enough for long enough to have much of an effect. It's less use than the plastic bags you put the gel in.

Re cleaning oven racks, IIRC the Tightwad Gazette recommends sealing them in a black plastic bag with a few tablespoons of ammonia and leaving the bag in the sun for the day.

    HTH

    • Pip (I'm posting from memory. I've never tried it and don't have my copy of Tightwad to hand, to check the quantities, but someone on here is bound to have tried it.)

Apart from baking, I very rarely use the oven nowadays since it's a real energy guzzler. Instead I prefer SC, MW, air fryer and hob. But when I do use it ……

I soak the racks in my kitchen sink filled with very hot water and washing up liquid; after an hour or so I scrub them with wire wool and they're good to go. If you do them regularly it doesn't take long.

In the bottom of the oven I have a metal tray lined with foil to collect splashes or spills; when it's dirty I just need to bin the foil and re-line. Any debris that escapes the tray and is left on the oven floor is soon removed after a quick soak with a paste of bicarb and water. Again, do it often. Cheaper than chemical products and far less noxious.

otb666 - I dread to think what the top of my oven looks like - old age prevents me from contortionist acts so I work by feel rather than sight! 😁

Thanks for the laugh YorksLass . The only time my oven gets used is when my DS decides to do his batched cooked curry where he uses a big pyrex dish and loads it with 6 jars of curry sauce 1.2kg of meat brocoli ginger pepper chili garlic Which causes overflow when cooking He does not use a lid. Then he carefully loads 6 jars and puts in fridge. Then eats just curry for next 6 days. This costs a fortune and I have to clean oven thoroughly after this every time. I let him do this as he is pass the age where I prepare his food and determined for him to not be molleycoddled but I do despair that the only thing he saves is his time perhaps definitely not money or my time.
