Address history discrepancy from 18+ years ago

Hi, I have been living with parents in this house for 20 years, with all bank applications using this address, however when asked for date moved in, I have put a date which I have just found out to be 2 years after when I really moved in. I am planning now to apply for a mortgage, and am wondering whether it would be better to put in the correct date, which would not match that held by credit agencies, or to put the incorrect date which does match. Since this is so long ago, and they supposedly only care about the last 2 years I am leaning toward the incorrect date, but would appreciate any advice. Alternatively, should I contact all credit agencies and correct my address history, or do they look at consistent application with banks historically, which this wouldn't affect? Thanks.

Nobody will care if its 18 or 20.

  • So it won't be flagged by the lender as being inconsistent with previous applications? I think I have applied for a current account in the past with the same bank I would apply for mortgage with, would they not notice this? Or will they really not care?

Lending policies differ from bank to bank, and so does the period they choose to check your past credit history.

The maximum length of time they keep your history on file is 6 years.

Some check only the last 3 years, others the full 6, no one looks back further than that.

18 or 20 years will make no difference - 18 or 20 months might.

At least it is a mortgage. The endless questions you can get just because you want to invest £100 in a savings account by contrast - your job, who you work for, where you work, gross annual salary, net monhtly pay, shoe size etc etc!

But your electoral record will go back decades - mine does as recorded correctly when I moved in all those umpteen decades ago on my credit reports. Well actually when I appeared on the electoral rolls at the address which is a bit different from the date I actually moved in.
