Tax Return for deceased - Missing Bank Interest information
Hi,
HMRC have requested that we complete a tax return for the tax year 2024-2025.
There was substantial income from savings interest that needs to be reported but the problem is we dont have the required information.
We originally had online access to the accounts via power of attorney but that access was removed by the banks as soon as we reported the death. We did receive letters detailing accrued interest up to the date of death as at 01 August 2025 but we didn't receive any written certificates of interest for the prior year paid from April 2024 to April 2025.
The tax return is due in March. How do we deal with the missing information, do we just inform HMRC that the information is unavailable to us or do we have to try and get information from the banks in the limited time available?
Has anyone had to deal with similar problems?
Many thanks.

Surly you must be aware of any interest payments made to by the bank? Speak to the bank’s bereavement team they should be able to provide statements.

Please read the post. The accounts were online and the bank removed access as soon as the death was notified.

Edit: There is also a missing P60 from a pension scheme. We have the documentation from the provider acknowledging the POA but did not receive the P60

I did read the post, but the executor must have records of all the payments made to the estate from the bank.

POA ends on death, the P60 should be sent to the executor.

it's relating to the deceased's personal tax, not the estate.

Apologies, I totally got the stone ent of the stick there. The bank’s bereavement department should be able to give you anything you require, Barclays did this for me with my mother’s account.

That's what I thought as well. I suspect the request to complete a tax return has stemmed from me letting HMRC know that there was some dividend tax due on the personal account but I gave them full details in a letter when I reported the estates income so they have all the detail already.

The executer ( or administrator of the estate) should request the information.

Ask the bank for a certificate of interest paid for the relevant tax years.
