The damage is largely surface-level, however given the use of the insurer’s repair service, the likely impact on renewal premiums, and the £500 excess, I’m also considering repair options outside insurance.

I’ve checked multiple providers, including online quote platforms, and the estimates vary widely—from £500 to £2,000. It’s not always clear whether the repair quality and paint match will be up to standard.

Some online services don’t even disclose who the repairer is until after the quote is accepted, which is a concern.

Some are mobile repairers! hopefully not DIY painters..!

I’m therefore trying to get one of the more reasonably priced repairers to inspect the car in person and validate the quote before proceeding.

As this is a premium brand with metallic silver paint, I’m particularly concerned about paint matching, and whether only a dealer would have access to the exact paint shade…?

You are aware that even if you do not make a claim theTerms & Conditions require that you inform the insurance company.

No, your worry about paint is unfounded. The paint suppliers have references with the recipe for every shade from every brand - and also have colour scanners to provide an EXACT match even to faded or previously-resprayed paint.

Franchise dealers rarely do their own bodywork anyway.

Get a couple of independent quotes first helps see if claiming is worth it with your £500 excess. Insurers usually write off cars only if repairs near the car’s value. Paying privately can save on premiums; just use a trusted shop and get a clear receipt.

At that value of car it will not, usually applies to cars of much lesser value.

Play with the expectation of winning not the fear of failure.    S.Clarke

I understand insurance companies have a threshold of around 50-70% repair cost v value of car before deciding if its a write-off. Although that can depend on type of damage if its a safety issue that can't be corrected and age of car.

I'm going through just that with Direct Line at present after someone crashed into my car.
