Your point is well understood, but just for clarity.

If your Mum was unwell/had a treatable illness, the NHS would still treat her for free.

People with cancer or a heart condition, would normally not be eligible for CHC. They would be medically treated by the NHS, and any care needed at home would be self funded or paid for by the LA ( if the person had a low level of assets)

Only certain specific cases, often very serious or terminal, qualify for CHC funding. The criteria seems to be someone who needs hospital type care ( drips, injections, transfusions, catheters, oxygen supply, regular nurse/doctor attendance etc) but where it is possible to be done outside hospital.

My thoughts as somene who has 'social care at home' and has done for 15+ years and is most likely going to end up in a care/ nursing home as I get older is.

Is the quality of care good enough or even better?
Are the rooms suitable and cosy?
    Are the activities good?
Are the carers consistent and good?
    Are meals varied and good?

My fears are not the cost but how good the place is, will it feel safe and a nice place to be. That will come with a price.

Yes its a lot of money but heating, food, room rent, on-call care hopefully when needed comes with a price.

It is a huge price tag you could possibly get a live-in carer for less but that depends on if person is able to live at home, home adapted and there wouldnt be an undue negative effect on partner still at home. I am going under the assumption that a nursing home is best place and that sadly is expensive for self funders.

My parents paid £600k for last 5 years for their care before sadly passing away. They never received any funding. My mother was unable to move talk see speak or hear had parkinsons But because she could BREATH unaided was not applicable for CHC. Both had dementia. My point is if you want CHC funding in later life you better start smoking now because if you can breath unaided you will not get it.

There's no guarantee you'll get CHC even if you can't breathe unaided.
