Additional electricity meter

My landlord extended my property  no 38 by knocking through to the premises next door 38a several years ago. I assumed the electricity had been merged together and He also adjusted the premises on the electoral register so the old basement beneath the premises became 38a. I kept receiving bills for the previous tenant next door and an engineer came to see if there was an alternate meter which we couldn’t find. Today the light tripped and I realised to my horror the light on the  other side stayed on so there is an alternate meter I was never aware of. The bills received exceed 7k as it’s been out of contract for several years although I never entered into a contract. How do I sort this out?

I wonder if there's something that can be done regarding back billing.  You tried to sort this out, their engineer said there wasn't a separate meter so how can they charge you for something that wasn't in your name?

Why do you think the light tripping but another light staying on means you have a second meter? We have three lighting rings in our place so if one trips the other two stay on but we have only one supply and one meter.

Have you actually seen this additional meter ?

Easy to double check, just throw the main switch and see if it still stays on.

After searching I found the meter boxed in at the floor of the new conversion so I do have 2 meters unfortunately

Whilst completely unaware the other meter existed I notified opus  that the other business that had previously occupied the premises had died but the bills keep coming with his name on and I kept assuming that this was just a bill for him so was sending them back unopened as I wouldnt open other peoples mail!

Please revisit that meter and make a note of the serial number and its reading. Then contact your supplier

Opus are a business supplier so their rates will be far higher than a domestic supplier especially the daily standing charge. I think your landlord needs to sort this out and he should be responsible for paying the bill.

Don’t contact Opus without taking advice first. Contact your LL and ask him what he is going to do about this. I would also speak to Citizens Advice.

@stressed229 has not yet answered robin9's question from yesterday about whether he has a domestic or business account?
