As I no longer had a valid licence to drive in the eyes of insurance companies

Dud the insurance companies tell you that or did you assume that?

The answer to that could be valuable information for others.

sheramber, apparently when I return my information to the DVLA for getting a new licence at 73,I am classed by the insurance companies as not having a licence at all until the DVLA issue one.I am still able to drive my car whilst I am not in possession of a physical driving licence. But the onus is on me not to have any accidents when I technically do not have a licence in the eyes of the law.My original insurers,Darwin, told me this over the phone when I enquired further as well as the two insurance brokers in my town when I tried to get a quote from then.First one said they wouldn't give me a quote as I had no licence, and the second wouldn't entertain me at all even if I did have a licence.Going round in circles,I felt a bit.

Have you officially been told this in writing as if you scroll back through the thread the DVLA license requirements seem clear when it is a direct renewal.

As your birthday was now 5 months ago the insuranc eissue mentioned in your new thread should now be easier.

I now have a licence issued by the DVLA which took a long time to come back due to questions about my diabetes. If it had came back sooner maybe I would have had more of an inclination to try harder to get a reasonable quote to continue driving, but I had little wish to push for that outcome.
