Buildings Insurance

Having inadvertently allowing my buildings and contents insurance to lapse, Admiral cancelled it on 16/01/26, charging me £45.37 for, what I’m informed was the outstanding balance.  I thought I’d be continuously covered!  Anyway, I’m now looking to get a buildings insurance policy, but in completing the questionnaire I have to confirm that I’ve never had a policy cancelled.  Does this mean I’m not able to purchase a new insurance policy from another company?

Was it "cancelled", or did it lapse? Ie you paid for a year, you got a year. You mention both lapse and cancel

Lapsing happens naturally at the end of every policy year, it doesnt have to be declared.

A cancelled policy that you need to declare is one stopped mid term for non-payment, for false declaration, fraud, etc. You dont need to declare either lapsed policies or ones where you cancelled it

Those who've had a policy cancelled can still buy insurance but who they can buy from is more limited and as a consequence of both these factors they will pay more.

You need to clarify what actually happened as you start by saying it lapsed and then say it was cancelled but these arent the same things.

Also this would be better on the Insurance board.

I had a DD and didn’t realise I’d have to renew.  I thought it was automatic.  I think I missed emails asking if I wanted to renew, so Admiral cancelled my policy.  I paid he outstanding balance immediately.

Sorry, I’m a bit confused. I’m not very good at finding my initial post. I’m not sure, now, if I’m posting in the right place. I have a feeling I changed my monthly DD which, I think, renewed automatically to an annual payment, which I think I should have renewed. I think I missed emails asking me if I wanted to renew. Admiral then cancelled my policy… I don’t understand how it cancelled with an outstanding balance, which I paid immediately.

DD and policy are different matters… about a month before the end of your prior policy Admiral will have been in contact with you and given you a quote for renewing. The letter will have said one of two things, either do nothing and we will assume you want to renew or if you want to renew contact us to do so.

If it was set to manual renewal then the old policy would simply have lapsed at the end of the policy year if you didnt contact them irrespective of the status of the DD

If it was set to auto renewal and you didnt contact them then automatically the policy would renew at the same time as the old one lapsing. They would continue to use the same DD or whatever the method of payment used previously was. If for some reason the payment didnt go through then they would start their non-payment cycle which would normally start with writing to you to advise your payment didnt go through and ultimately end with them voiding the policy for non-payment if you failed to make contact/payment in time.

Its very unclear from your various message which has occurred

Thank you. I’m not sure, now, which occurred. All I know is I no longer have home insurance, which is deeply troubling. I’ll have to try shopping around to see what I need to do.

I think the point which others are making, is that before you start shopping around, it would be better to find out for sure whether your policy lapsed, or was cancelled. Because that will make a difference to how you answer the quote question, and thus what policies may be offered and at what price (as well as whether you are making a true declaration either way)
