Looking for hopefully an online source of historic prices to calculate potential capital gains.
without success, already tried either Stock Exchange history, or Company / Unit trust websites — can get as far back as 2006 in some cases

If the company is still listed shares might not be too difficult. TradingView is a good source but there's Google Finance, Yahoo and many others. ADVFN sometimes has old data. Unit trusts/Oeics could be trickier. Did the Telegraph still print the prices in its pages back then? You could try digging up newspapers from archives.1 -
If you can't find a free service, and its traded on the LSE you can get them for £6 each. I assume other exchanges would do something similar.
