EDF final bill advice
Hi everyone, just looking to get some advice on my current situation.
I moved out of a rented property last summer on 18/7/25 and submitted my final readings online, in all the chaos of moving forgot to inform EDF by email that I had moved out and that these were my final readings. EDF have now been in contact with me saying I am responsible for the bills until August when the new tenants must have moved in. I have supplied my tenancy contract which was until 31/7/25, the landlord asked me to move out earlier than this to do some decorating and I was happy to, this was agreed over WhatsApp. EDF have said I need proof from the landlord this was agreed on but my old landlord isn't getting back to me and somehow I don't think they'll accept WhatsApp messages as proof.
Also they have also sent me two final bills, one in September and one November, about £20 difference and are refusing to tell me exactly how the final bill was recalculated.
I feel like at the moment I'm just going round in circles with them and would really appreciate some advice on where I stand and if anyone has ever been through something similar before.

Really the landlord is responsible from you moving out and new folks moving in.1

I agree, but even with giving EDF a copy of my contract they are still saying I am responsible for the bills until AugustFrugaiMacDugal said:Really the landlord is responsible from you moving out and new folks moving in.0 -
Can you just send the August invoice to your landlord ?TorF_ said:

Well, you were decent with landlord and vacated early to suit him decorating, maybe didn't use much electricity but the daily standing charge would add up.Keep pestering him for his share.0

If you've got a contract that ends then, and a WhatsApp message from your landlord confirming that you moved out then, they're not going to be able to convince anyone that you were still liable for the bill.Have you raised a formal complaint with EDF yet?

I'm sure that the OP can. Whether or not the landlord will pay it is another matter entirely. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
I've sent in a formal complaint email, no reply yet. I'm going to try and give EDF a call later, just to try and sort it out over the phone because email seems to be useless.QrizB said:TorF_ said:... somehow I don't think they'll accept WhatsApp messages as proof. If it comes to it, EDF need to prove that you were resident after 31/7/25. Just wanted to give an update, called up EDF today and it’s all been sorted out. Turns out when I sent in my tenancy contract they couldn’t open it on their system and the ‘energy specialist’ who was dealing with my account just didn’t say anything. Even when I asked multiple times why they weren’t accepting the contract as proof I wasn’t responsible for the bills in August they just didn’t mention the fact they couldn’t see the contract. It’s all been sorted now but I still have multiple missed payment flags on my credit report and it was sent to a debt collector so I’m still pursuing a complaint to try and get those removed.7
