Many years ago, even before online purchasing was a thing, we were looking to buy an item of furniture. It was in stock at JL (Liverpool, previously George Henry Lee)) and also another small  furniture only retailer locally.
The other retailer's price undercut JL. JL refused to price match because "we don't match or beat "them" on price".
As a result we purchased from "them".

    Who was the cheaper retailer?

Why would you not just buy from them? Does John Lewis offer additional services that may justify not being as cheap?
JL often have a free extended warranty, like 5 years on TVs, 2 years on small electrical etc.

Some may like dealing with a local store than a nameless, faceless firm at the other end of the country.
Maybe the other retailer is £200 cheaper because they are not offering an extended warranty. So if you feel the warranty is worth the extra cost then go to John Lewis, or if you want the absolute cheapest price without the extra warrenty go elsewhere.
You can't always get cheap and good service, something has to give.

I found John Lewis has very dynamic pricing.

Back in November Google was offering £100 cashback on Chromebook Plus laptops purchased from specific retailers including JL.

Out of interest, being a chromebook user, I was lookin around and came across JL  offering the Acer 516 at £279 which is a very good price.

This was marked as a price matching Later on the  price went from £279 through to £499 Currently its at £399.

I did purchase at £279 and have received the £100 cashback

John Lewis also no longer just offers best price through items available in the wider market but through their own "job lot" purchases.
We have just ordered a new sofa - not from JL in the end - but it was prompted by a JL product.  We saw the sofa offered by JL last Easter but it was only one colour and only a set amount.  We missed them by the time we decided to purchase.  At Twixmas, we saw JL had virtually the same sofa again with the same restrictions.  Shopping around meant we found a better for us deal (but more expensive).  The JL sofa was excellent value for what it was but also very much akin to a posh version of "The Middle of Lidl".
