Hall Layout

Hi All,

I was hoping for some inspiration regarding the design of a hall. We've just moved into the house and it's a bit messy at the moment. Storage for shoes and coats is the big priority. I'm not sure that shoe cupboard works. My partner has mulled over the possibility of having a piano under the stairs but I'm not sure if there's room. The grey on the staircase is likely to be changed as is the wallpaper. The mats are also temporary. The hoover etc is handy here but might not work long-term.

If anyone can return an image with suggestions that would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance

I'd start with finding out where else you could put the cleaning stuff. Is there anywhere else?

It's easier with children if coats and shoes go in the hall. Hard enough to get them to put them where you won't fall over them without them having to go far from the door.
You could probably do something creative with coats and shoes storage.

If a piano, where does everything else go?
A piano there would echo and disturb everyone in the house.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I genuinely don't think the piano will work there. I think it was meant as a feature piece at the entrance.

Do you have young children?  Or even elderly visitors?  If so, those open tread stairs could be a hazard.....

If funds run to it, I would have the stairs replaced with proper ones, with a fitted cupboard under them.

I'd do this - box in that whole wall and turn it into a cupboard, and get rid of the open tread stairs. Personally I think they only work if the steps are very deep - which those aren't.

You'll find it becomes a dumping ground rather than a feature piece - especially if no one in the house plays regularly. I'm also not sure (looking at your photo) there's really room for one.

Funds are not great, the stairs were not carpeted when we moved in so we had to do that. The kids live up stairs in the room above.

You obviously need some kind of cupboard for cleaning supplies, shoes  and hooks for coats.

I would not have it built in as you would lose the open plan nature of present set up

However if you were to change the stairs you could look at having custom designed storage rather than an understairs cupboard. I'm sure you could seek inspiration on pinterest

You can have the stairs converted rather than replaced by adding risers.
For ideas for that space, we really need a sketch and dims.
