DVLA Form D46 - Photo ID - ?

Hi,

DVLA have sent me form D46 to renew my driving licence.

But there is no mention of photo for ID, nor space to attach one.

Last renewal [D1] asked for photo, & I received a photo ID card licence, plus the paper one.

But there's no mention of a photo ID card on form D46. I need this as ID, for all sorts of things.

Total confusion.

Please advise.

Many thanks 👍

Do you want to update the photo? If not then they'll just use the existing one, surely?

    Are you sure?

“The paper one”, ie the counterpart, was abolished in 2015, i.e.before your last renewal.

If you're concerned, go to the post office and renew in person. They will do all the form checks and take your picture if needed for £4.50

Do you have a passport? They will take the photo from that and make it valid for 10 years (yes, in extreme cases this means that a photo can be 19+ years old before it is replaced.)

On the back of the form there is a link to follow which will guide you through the electronic process to renew your licence and offer you the chance to take and upload a new photo or to use the one from your passport if it’s valid.

I used this process a week ago, uploaded my passport photo and received my new photo licence 3 days later.

The paper counterpart no longer exists.
  • If DVLA already hold a valid photo (from a previous photocard licence or a passport), D46 doesn’t ask for one because they’ll reuse it. If you want to change the photo, you do it online via the link on the form or at the Post Office. Otherwise just return D46 as instructed and the new photocard will be issued with the existing image.

Thanks - I have no idea, the form is as clear as mud, no mention of photos or photo ID card, only that they want the old one back.

My overall appearance will not have changed since the last photo - but why don't they simply state what you have said?

Chaos, basically. All I want to do is get the paperwork in the post.
