Capital One and free alerts

Hi

I have just seen an item on BBC this morning by a financial expert saying Capital One credit cards are now offering a free monthly text alert service linked to Equifax letting you know if someone has applied for a new loan etc and obviously if you know it was not you it is an early warning system for identity theft. You will also get an all clear text each month if nothing has happened.

This service is available to new customers and existing and would normally cost £50pa. I am thinking of applying even though I would not use the card.

Seems like a good deal unless anyone knows differently??

I saw it too and just posted the following on another board, I've signed up for it as I have one of these cards.

    Hi,

I've just found out that if you have a Capital One Credit card you're entitled to register with Equifax for free email alerts when you're credit record is changed, the charge for this service is normally £50.

"Basically you get an alert every time a change is made to your credit file to give you instant knowledge of if someone has access to your details and is making or attempting to make fraudulent transactions. You also get access to your full credit report online twice a year, there don't appear to be any ifs, buts or maybes with it and the guy from Moneybox on Radio 4 stated he could find no tricks in there. I did check to see if this had been posted before but apologies if it has."

The Capital One 'Capital One Identity Alert' offer is run in association with Equifax not Experian.

    Full details at http://www.equifax.co.uk/capitalone/index.html

The 'catch' if it can be called that is that you will receive an email alert every time your credit file changes but you can only request access to two free Equifax Credit Reports per year - if you wanted more to see what had changed then there is a charge.

    Regards
