Moving from one council/HA to another 200+ miles away

Hi all, looking for some advice. I currently live in a 3 bedroomed HA property, myself, husband and my mum. My mum has recently expressed interest to move into her long term partners house. This would leave myself and my partner in a 3 bedroomed house, where we claim two rooms a he is disabled and I am his carer, I sometimes need to sleep separately.

We would like to downsize and move closer to my husbands father, he has recently lost his wife and needs some familial support, he is all alone where he lives as he moved there 10 years ago to be with his wife, he has asked if we would like to move closer and both my husband and I would like to.

My issue is that we are not 'tenants' where we live and are classed as 'living with parents'. If my mum moves out, will we be classed as homeless? If we willing downsize, will the 2 city's/HA work together to help us find a property near my husbands father?

Have you asked mum or HA landlord if you could be added to the tenancy as tenants?? If so what answer??

Have you carefully read the existing tenancy agreement and HA website covering these matters??

Which country ?? ("Succession" rights to tenancy vary I think by country....)
  • There was an issue with arrears when I moved in, the housong association wouldnt let her until it was cleared, now that its cleared they asked her to maintain it for a year, before they will consider putting us on the tenency. In the time it took to be paid off, she met her partner and wants to move out.

She needs to get you on to the tenancy asap before she considers moving or she could be making you homeless.
You can then register on home swapper or similar

why not start looking for rental properties in the area you want to move to.
You could also apply to their council/HA and be put on their waiting list.

Sounds stupid, but Ive never private rented before and heard to many horror stories. Plus, im on benefits and have 2 cats... I know private renting has changed for people on benefits and people with pets, but im scared of it...

Ill contact my the HA on monday and see what the options will be... we had this conversation a few years ago about us being on the tenancy, they dont like under/over occupying here, so they'll probably want me out either way

You likely won't be eligible to go on the housing list in the north east. However even if they accept your local connection due to family links waiting lists are several years long.

No your current landlord or local housing department won't and has no ability to help you obtain housing in the north east.

Your only way forward with social housing is to be put on the tenancy where you currently live then swap with someone to your desired location.

Your other option is to get together rent in advance and a deposit and find a private rental.

If your mum is not willing to do that she's not a great mum.
