Yes your bill must have been in the thousands, but if it is not, it is likely that he is showing you a charge for another job, which is in the thousands as my post above.

I tend to pay cash in the pub as it is far easier to keep tabs on what you are drinking and spending. Recently in the local I was asked whether I was going to have more than one pint and could I pay for the second at the sametime, the reason being the charge the banks impose on each transaction. When I said I was paying cash they weren't worried. As it happens watching my team on the TV is so stressful that I tend to have more than 2!

Edit: I used to do private English tutoring in Italy, alongside school and evening class work, and there cash was king, for convenience and all the other reasons you might suppose..;-) Now I'm retired back in the UK I teach Italian to one student , conveniently below the annual exemption for tax declaration. It just gets bank transferred to my regular account. The time commitment and complications of earning more means I don't bother looking for any more students.

There was previously little option but I know that many would still have assumed that not everything was going to be declared. Remember the conversations of how much discount there would be for cash rather than cheque and people actively wanting to avoid cheques with some being open about having to declare it if its been paid by cheque.

There is a difference between a customer asking to pay cash and a business requesting cash only.

Mind you, recently our local chemist had a notice saying cash only. Their card machine wasn’t working.

My local Chinese take away is cash only.
