In that case, the link does confirm they will accept US denominated cheques (and they will add an undisclosed-until-you ask margin to the exchange rate). But, too many people take the Google AI Slop as fact.kermchem said:MeteredOut said:
I increasingly see "according to google" to mean "according to the AI slop presented to me by google that I've taken at face value as I can't be bothered to verify".eskbanker said:
"According to Google" is a largely meaningless phrase, deployed to try to attach bogus credibility to 'I found a website which may or may not be reliable...' or 'I couldn't find a website that...'!*Trouble* said:According to Google.... no UK banks will accept US dollar cheques anymore;
So, there a very good chance the response is a hallucination and downright wrong. As seems to the case here.
Not claiming that my Google question and its answer is any more valid, but when I asked "will lloyds bank accept a us dollar cheque in the uk". The first word of the Google AI answer was "Yes", followed by a longer explanation, and a link.0 -
I don't have a NatWest account, but the following is from their website:Dicentra said:
That is simply wrong, NatWest current account accepts us dollars cheques, I just pay my cheques over the branch counter and the charges are low.*Trouble* said:
According to Google.... no UK banks will accept US dollar cheques anymore; I know none of mine do. I tried the Post Office too.TheBanker said:Who do you bank with? You may be able to pay it in at your bank, but you'll need to go to an actual branch and pay it in over the counter - not through an app or an ATM. Or you might be able to post it to them. There will be a charge, and it could take weeks for the funds to become available, depending on the value of the cheque and how the bank process it.Please note that we're unable to accept:
- deposits made to your account in non-Sterling cheques, international or domestic drafts or traveller's cheque deposits from any issuer
Thanks to everyone for the posts and all the hard work you do. :lovethoug0 -
Where does it say that? That could be account specific.*Trouble* said:

This also from their website
"Foreign cheques are processed either by cheque negotiation or collection. The time it takes for a cheque to clear depends on which method we use to process the cheque. Regardless of whether a cheque is negotiated or collected it can still be returned up to seven years later for reasons relating to fraud.- Cheque negotiation - It takes 2 working days for the funds to be credited. Cheques can be returned unpaid for up to 7 years
- Cheque collection - Payment is made when we receive the funds from the bank abroad. This can take up to 12 weeks to clear. This is subject to additional fees levied by the overseas bank"
But, that does not 100% mean it is correct either. Some companies simply remove links to pages without removing the pages themselves, so they can still be found. If the OP says which bank(s) they are with, they will be able to get more help.0 -
Found that text. Natwest Iternational. Not the same legal entity as Natwest Bank, so not the same rules and its not from "their" (Natwest) website.*Trouble* said:

I'm with Nationwide and Chase.
Chase don't accept cheques at all, being an online only account.
Nationwide have said "Nationwide can only accept cheques in sterling. We don’t accept any foreign‑currency cheques, including US dollar cheques. Because of this, you’ll need to contact the cheque issuer and ask them to reissue the payment in GBP or arrange an alternative method of payment. I’m really sorry I know it’s not the answer you were hoping for, but this is the way the funds can be paid into your Nationwide account."
I physically went into HSBC, Santander and the Post Office, none of which will accept foreign cheques anymore, even if I did have an account with them. Thanks to everyone for the posts and all the hard work you do. :lovethoug0 -
From what we know in this thread so far if you want to deposit this cheque you need to open a current account with NatWest or Lloyds* (not the international versions).*Trouble* said:I'm with Nationwide and Chase.

*Halifax and Bank of Scotland are parts of Lloyds Banking Group and it looks like they follow the same process and have identical help pages.
"If you want to pay in a foreign currency cheque, sign your name on the back of the cheque and call in to branch. We’ll process your cheque either by cheque negotiation or collection. The time it takes to credit your account depends on which method we use."

I can confirm that I successfully paid 2 USD cheques into my Lloyds current account a few months ago. I had to go into a branch and fill out a form.
It's probably not worth it if it's a small amount and you also need to ensure that the name on the cheque matches your account name exactly (mine were initially rejected because the cheque included my middle initial which was not on my account details so I had to get the branch to show proof and update my account to include it).

Well all I can say, I opened a NatWest current account a few months ago just to deposit USD cheques when my original bank stopped accepting non UK cheques. Since then I simply go into the local branch and make my deposits, very easy process including opening an account.*Trouble* said:

As above, that website excerpt is not from NatWest, its from NatWest International, which is a different bank.Dicentra said:
